ECMTA Autumn Gathering 3-5 November 2017 in Leiston Abbey, Suffolk (UK)

ECMTA Autumn Gathering 3-5 November 2017 in Leiston Abbey, Suffolk (UK)
In cooperation with Pro Corda

The European Chamber Music Teachers Association´s Autumn Gathering took place in Leiston Abbey, Suffolk (United Kingdom), on 3-5 November 2017. Our host and partner was Pro Corda.  The ECMTA Autumn Gathering delegates were privileged to hear and see the presentation of  Pro Corda by  prof Andrew Quartermain, artistic director. Our guest speakers included prof Matthew Jones (Head of Chamber Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, UK), Richard Ireland (Artistic Director, ChamberStudio, UK) and Kai Christiansen (San Francisco, CA, USA), founder of Chamber Music Database

The events included masterclasses for students by ECMTA members/professors, Members´forum and concerts.  We were happy to welcome two our member professors Yiannis Miralis and Michael Tsalka with their program "Sacred Orbs of Dance" (see BOOKLET of AUTUMN GATHERING 2017 below) with  works by Spanish, Cypriot, Greek, French, American, South-American and British composers.

Leiston Abbey is a beautiful historic site dating from 1363, set in the Suffolk countryside only a short drive from the seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold. The beautiful abbey ruins are incorporated into the buildings providing a stunning backdrop. Parts of the ruins were purchased in the 1970s by Pro Corda, the International Chamber Music Academy, a charity running music courses for children and adults.

The Annual Spring Meeting of the ECMTA in Kuopio, Finland 21-23 April 2017 - 10th Anniversary of the ECMTA

The Annual Spring Meeting of the European Chamber Music Teachers´ Association came to its conclusion on Sunday, 23 April. The hospitality of the Kuopio Conservatory made it very hard to leave, as no matter what kind of weather we experienced outside - rain, hail, wind and sun all on one day! - there was always a feeling of warm welcome present inside the beautiful Kuopio Music Centre.

Through chamber music a sense of family develops quickly. At this meeting we greeted our new members from Portugal and new guests from Italy and France. During these three days, chamber music pedagogues from all over Europe – Finland, Lithuania, Italy, Portugal, UK, France, Russia, Estonia – listened to concerts, presentations and guest speakers and spent wonderful times together talking about music and teaching music.

European Chamber Music Teachers Association´s Autumn Gathering in Tallinn 9-11 Dec, 2016

The Autumn Gathering at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre came to a splendid conclusion Sunday, 11 Dec 2016, with a final wave of ensemble lessons, an informal information meeting providing an admirably concise but detailed update on current issues from Chairwoman Marje Lohuaru and Secretary/Treasurer Piret Väinmaa, a lovely final concert and then a concluding reception bathed in sunlight from the panoramic windows on the 4th floor of the Academy. Students participated not only from EAMT, but also from the Heino Eller Tartu Music College, Tallinn Music High School, Juozas Naujalis Music Gymnasium (Kaunas) and, for the first time, from the Xenia Chamber Music Course (Italy). As is usual, more than 10 professors - from Italy, Portugal, the UK, France, Poland, Cyprus and Lithuania - provided masterclasses with an impressive list of student ensembles playing a broad selection of repertoires and genres: in the three days there were well over 60 lessons. The concerts also featured an especially interesting collaboration between the Xenia Course quartet and a quartet from Kaunas, who came together to perform the first movement of Mendelssohn's Octet; the remaining three movements were expertly played by an octet of students from Tallinn.

Annual Spring Meeting 2016 at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw – a beautiful and enriching experience!

The ECMTA Annual Spring Meeting at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw came to a conclusion on 1st of May 2016.
This was again a meeting rich with stimulating conferences, masterclasses, discussions and concerts, perfectly organized and harmoniously executed, leaving us all inspired and motivated to take new ideas forward.

The conference provided insights into Polish chamber music practice, pedagogy and repertoire. Special thanks to prof Eugenijus Laurinaitis, MD, Ph.D, Professor of Psychology at the Mykolas Romeris University, Vilnius, for the lecture and workshop on Chamber Ensemble as a Group: Personalities, Characters, Relationship, Creativity – and a special workshop: Relationship, Emotions, and Values in Group Dynamics – Implications for Teaching.
