7th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition announces the 2013 competitors!

On September 23 ten of the world's finest emerging string quartets will arrive and take the stage for the 7th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition. The preliminary jury have now selected an international selection of accomplished musicians of the highest standard. The quartets are:

  • Auric Quartet (Australia)
  • Quartet Berlin-Tokyo (Japan/ Israel)
  • Dudok Kwartet (Netherland)
  • Girard Quartet (France)
  • Idomeneo String Quartet (UK/ Norway)
  • Jubilee Quartet (UK)
  • Novus Quartet (Korea)
  • Van Kuijk Quartet (France)
  • Quatuor Varèse (France)
  • Yul String Quartet (Korea)

The ten quartets were chosen by a preliminary jury, including Levon Chilingirian, leader of the  Chilingirian String Quartet. The selection was made based on audio recordings sent in from all over the world! Applicants from over 30 countries applied to be considered for the first round, and the overall number of applicants have been record high.

These ten quartets have an exeptional high level of musical understanding and wonderful perfoming and the competition in September 2013 will be very exiting,” says competition director Marianne Baudouin Lie.

Trondheim Chamber Music Festival presents 7th TRONDHEIM INTERNATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION for String Quartets - 24 – 29 September 2013

The competition is open to String Quartets from all over the world. With attractive prizes, both cash prizes and festival engagements in 2014, we hope that the competition can act as a springboard to a further career in chamber music. The competition is held during Trondheim Chamber Music Festival.

We are honoured to announce the ensembles chosen for the 7th Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy 2012.

  • Jubilee Quartet (UK)
  • Trio Patetico (Norway)

TICA-ensembles-2012-previewThe young musicians’ level of playing is amazingly high, and applications have come in from all over the world, as far away as Azerbaijan and Colombia. The combination of internationally renowned instructors and an exciting festival running parallel is being noticed internationally, and during this week Trondheim is becoming an international meeting ground for young professional and student string quartet.

The four quartets were selected from several applications from all over the world. The Norwegian Trio Patetico is specially invited after winning the competition Norwegian Young Musicians 2011. Trondheim International Chamber Music Academy takes place 18 - 23 September as part of Trondheim Chamber Music Festival.  String quartets from all over the world are welcome to apply for the academy, which focuses on advanced student quartets and young professional quartets.

Hatto Beyerle is Academy leader 2012. Other Instructors are Quatuor Ebène, pianist Gunilla Süssmann and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The academy offers a unique opportunity with a combination of Master classes and playing chamber music together with the instructors. The Academy takes part as Trondheim Chamber Music Festival 2012, and the Academy’s closing concert on Sunday 23 September is part of the festival’s programme.

One of the groups will be chosen to go straight on to next year’s Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, where they will be competing for attractive prizes and concert engagements.
New of 2012 is that Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition has become a part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, a global network of music competiton.
