20th Xenia Chamber Music Course

The International Xenia Chamber Music Course for young string players took place in Pracatinat in the beautiful Natural Park of Orsiera Rocciavrè in the Italian Alps, just 70 klms west of Turin, Italy from July 21st to 31st 2017.
Thirty seven students, between 10 - 22 yrs of age, from eight different countries took part and were coached by nine musicians coming from six different countries - Ilona Klusaite (Lithuania and ECMTA member); Daniel Roberts (UK) ; Prunella Pacey (Holland/UK), Andrè Swanepoel (South Africa/Wales/Ireland); Adrian Pinzaru (Romania/Italy); Claudia Ravetto and Giacomo Agazzini (Italy); Elizabeth Wilson (UK/Italy and ECMTA member) and Eilis Cranitch( Ireland/Italy ECMTA member).
Everyday each student took part in three different chamber groups, string orchestra and and a scheduled individual study period. All three works studied by the students during the course in different groups and formations were then performed by them in three public concerts given in different venues over the last weekend of the course.
But that’s not all !
To celebrate our 20th anniversary we had some very special events :
An anniversary concert “Xenia&Friends” on Sunday 23rd July in the beautiful venue of the chapel of the Fort di Fenestrelle, the biggest Alpine Fortress in Europe. All staff members together with older students performed in various formations. The concert closed with a performance of Schumann’s 1st quartet by the Lyskamm Quartet, a vibrant young Italian string quartet, who acted as our quartet in residence for the first three days of the course.
A second staff concert took place late on the evening of Thursday 27th of July in the unusual outdoor setting of a quarry carved out of a rock in the woods surrounding the Pracatinat Centre where the course is held.
In addition we had the pleasure to welcome as our guest of honour the renowned cellist and founder member of the Orlando Festival Stephan Metz, who spent three days with us. Besides giving public masterclasses to two student quartets - the Mozaic quartet from Lithuania and the Turin Corservatoire student quartet, he also gave a very interesting lecture-recital performing music for cello solo by György Kurtág.
Lastly we were delighted to have a special visitor in Evan Rothstein, chairman of ECMTA from 2009-2016 and deputy head of strings at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London who came for the last weekend of the course, sitting in on sessions, participating in all activities and being very supportive and helpful.
The success of the 20th Course Chamber Music Course was due to the hard work on the part of all the students and to the enthusiasm and dedication of all staff members, for whom chamber music is a mission in life!
