“MUSICA VITALE” is gaining momentum

Text by Petras Kunca

The 4th International Music Competition “With Music through Europe” took place on 30th May – 3rd June 2018 in Vilnius. It was organized by the institutional member of ECMTA, a cultural association MUSICA VITALE at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences and the Vilnius J. Tallat - Kelpša Conservatoire. The Competition involved 134 participants, among which were 21 chamber ensembles, 26 vocalists and 50 pianists-soloists from USA, Latvia, Poland, Belorussia, Russia, China, Czechia, Italy, Taiwan and Lithuania. The three different juries evaluated the performance of participants.
The abundance of the participants showed increased interest in the competition. I know this competition from very beginning and in my opinion it has become a small miracle. It was the only competition in Lithuania where the winners had the opportunity to perform in Lithuania and Italy. Today, this geography has expanded to several positions in Germany. The artistic level has risen sharply, the funding has improved as well. MUSICA VITALE really showed its vitality.
Another thing worth emphasizing is constantly expanding connection of this competition with European Chamber Music Teachers’ Association. As the chairwoman of ECMTA, Professor of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Marje Lohuaru said in the last meeting in Warsaw, the Association encourages international contacts between teachers and students, and strengthens the significance of chamber music and music art in a cultural society overall. Now in this event in Vilnius for several days we met the representatives of ECMTA as well. Professor of Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London Dr. Evan Rothstein, Professor of Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre Dalia Balsytė, the organizer of this competition, the Artistic director of MUSICA VITALE Nijolė Darotėja Beniušytė, they formed half of the chamber music jury members. The Professors of S. Moniuszko Music Academy in Gdansk Anna Prabucka-Firley, Krzysztof Sperski and Pavel Kuklinski, the teacher of J. Naujalis Music Gymnasium in Kaunas Daiva Stulgytė-Povilaitienė, the director of MUSICA VITALE Nijolė Karaškaitė working shoulder to shoulder with all colleagues, have achieved excellent results in the competition. The performance of students from Gdansk was particularly successful: the two piano trios, prepared by our colleague A. Prabucka-Firlej, returned to homeland awarded with Absolute Winner prizes and a pianist of the trio, a real wunderkind Kacper Kuklinski won the Grand Prix in piano solo category as well. It would be nice to see even more ECMTA friends in the next competition “With Music through Europe”.
I would like to congratulate, to thank all participants with decision to take part and show their artistic abilities in this competition and to wish a prosperous artistic career in the future.
